Title: Development of concepts for site optimization and expansion of the technical image using the example of the "PSKW-Rio" project idea with a subsequent evaluation of the overall idea about the reduction of CO₂ emissions and the permanent increase in energy and resource efficiency
Short title: PSKW Rio
Abstract
The overall project aims to contribute to CO₂ reduction and resource conservation in Rhineland-Palatinate. To this end, a technological concept is to be developed in a pilot project using a pumped storage power plant, which will reduce energy and resource consumption compared to the state-of-the-art. Using the example of the PSKW-Rio, an updated technical concept, an analysis of the existing network infrastructure, and an overview of possible business models are thus to be developed, as well as supplementary site and infrastructure concepts that make optimal and efficient use of the available resources. Finally, the impact of the individual ideas and the overall picture will be evaluated in terms of CO₂ emissions, energy, and resource efficiency to quantify the potential contribution of the strategic concepts of this pilot project to the climate protection goals Rhineland-Palatinate.
The highly dynamic online functionality of the planned pumped storage power plant PSKW-Rio is currently unique in the German power plant park. It illustrates the innovative character of the project idea. With the more successful updating of the technical and operational project idea of the PSKW-Rio into an overall validatedconcept, the model character of the project for similar application scenarios is made clear. This will be underlined again by the supplementary site and infrastructure concepts, which will also demonstrate the transferability of the project idea to other sites. In this way, the research conducted as part of the PSKW-Rio pilot project contributes to the further development of new technologies in a practice-oriented manner to promote the intelligent use of renewable energies and their widespread use in Rhineland-Palatinate and beyond. The project is thus ideally integrated into the "Energy Efficient Systems (EES)" field of work of the "Intelligent Technologies for Sustainable Development" research focus area at Trier University of Applied Sciences, which deals with issues relating to sustainable energy system technologies in the course of climate protection.
The project is supported by funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the objective "Investment in Growth and Employment" (IWB) for the funding period 2014-2020 (project funding).
