International Material Flow Management (M.Sc.)

The English-speaking Master Degree Program with a Master of Science degree in International Material Flow Management (IMAT M. Sc.) has been offered at the Environmental-Campus Birkenfeld since the winter semester 2004/2005.

The IMAT Master of Science Program focuses on the teaching of management knowledge, supplemented by political, intercultural and scientific content.
Detailed Information about the IMAT study program can be found on the website www.imat-master.com.

Content

The concept of the Environmental-Campus Birkenfeld intends for interdisciplinary education in the sense of sustainable development. Material Flow Management (MFM) is an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses knowledge areas in economics, natural sciences, law, engineering and communication science. The study program International Material Flow Management takes this approach into account through its interdisciplinary module design with a focus on material flow management and business administration.

In addition to the knowledge of regional efficiency and economic potentials, the students are taught the perspectives of material flow management as a tool for regional economic development. Key aspects in the field of material flow managements are innovative financing concepts (such as fundraising, contracting and public-private-partnership) for new technologies, logistics structures and management approaches, as well as network analyzes, project development and project management. More ecological focal points are ecosystem basics, technology-induced potential hazards for the biosphere and environmental policy instruments. The close integration of ecology and economy in material flow management is reflected in the design of the curriculum.

Furthermore the students will continue to learn the basics of MFM-oriented planning and economic evaluation of sustainable supply and disposal systems for regions and companies. This enables them to meet social changes and the associated changes in resource requirements with innovative management approaches and environmental technologies. The students learn how to initiate, calculate, plan and carry out projects. The supplementary teaching of intercultural competence and the strengthening of communicative skills in negotiation and presentation help the graduates to convincingly present later required systemic change processes in projects to the respective decision-makers.

The study program as a whole deals with the question of how economic growth and the careful use of natural resources can be reconciled and how MFM is related to them. In contrast to the IMAT-M.Eng. more emphasis is placed on management approaches and innovative financing approaches in material flow management.
The supplementary teaching of intercultural competence and the strengthening of communicative skills in negotiation and presentation help the graduates to convincingly present later required systemic change processes in projects to the respective decision-makers.

The IMAT M.Sc. promotes interdisciplinary thinking and approach in solving environmental issues and provides students with the necessary technical knowledge, skills and methodologies to enable them to do scientific work and critically classify new scientific evidence in relevant areas.

Curriculum

The two-year IMAT M.Sc. programme is designed as a classroom study with small classes. In the first year the courses includes theoretical basics in the fields of business administration, material flow management, communication, philosophy of science as well as foreign languages and ecology. The first two semesters are structured in the form of lectures, exercises and seminars / specializations. The courses will be completed by written exams.

The second academic year is practical oriented. In the 3rd semester, students complete a 6-month internship in German or European / international companies or research institutes. The practical semester serves primarily to implement the theoretical knowledge gained during the first academic year and to gain further professional experience. During the 4th semester, students work on their master's thesis, in which they develop solutions for a concrete material flow management problem within six months.

Career opportunities

In an increasingly globalizing environment, whose environmental problems are becoming more and more obvious and urgent. Interdisciplinary education, the view of interdependencies and consequences of one of the most important elements in teaching, the scenarios of progressive environmental degradation are viable and globally effective and sustainable change processes oppose. Therefore executives are required, who are capable of providing interdisciplinary know-how and connecting different fields of knowledge and tasks. The IMAT study course prepares for a successful and future-oriented career. Areas of application can be:

•    Global industrial companies in a wide range of business sectors: executives, production managers, buyers, sales and project engineers, technology strategy specialists, environmental officers, sustainability managers,
•    Project manager for energy and utility companies as well as energy service providers and disposal companies,
•    Business consultants, senior consultants / international consultants and project developers,
•    Smaller environmentally friendly, producing or service companies,
•    Freelancers, eco-entrepreneurs, starting a business with their own business idea,
•    Research in the field of MFM, scientific cooperation, doctorate.

The IMAT M.Sc. meet the formal requirement of the doctorate. The participation and successful completion of the Master's program will qualify and entitle the future graduates to pursue their doctorate in Germany or abroad.
You will also be given access to the higher service in Germany.

Some graduates of the IMAT master program (eg from Chile) have already been able to set up their own companies in the field of circular economy / material flow management in their home country and thus successfully realize sustainable projects.

Admission requirements

The holistic approach of IMAT M.Sc. allows and wishes the admission of applicants with heterogeneous previous knowledge. In addition to students with a "technically oriented" business management Bachelor's degree, students from different sub-disciplines of law, environmental, natural and social sciences can be included if they have dealt with business and environmental problem areas as part of their initial training or professional career.
The study group with different educational backgrounds and geographical origins enormously enriches the case-related and discourse-oriented teaching areas and is wanted by the program management.

Applicants are admitted on the basis of the formal criteria set out in §4 of the Examination Regulations (completed university study, sufficient knowledge of the English language and qualified practical experience) as well as an individual selection interview. The approval may be subject to conditions. The Admissions Committee decides on the existence of any equivalent financial statements and on exceptions and conditions.
The Admissions Committee examines the following documents of each applicant:

•    Cover letter / request
•    Curriculum Vitae
•    Academic degrees
•    APS certificate (for Chinese students)
•    Proof of practical experience
•    Proof of language certificate
•    Miscellaneous.

The tuition fee is determined on the basis of an application evaluation procedure. For this selection procedure, the following documents must also be submitted:
Brief description of a research project and personal motivation

•    Brief description of a research project and personal motivation
•    Scholarships application
•    Letter of recommendation
•    Summary of previous scientific work
•    Copy of identity card or passport
