Which tools can be used in the research?

In addition to search tools, there are a number of additional tools available for the research. For example, thesauri, dictionaries and translation services can help you to collect appropriate search terms. The following list contains links to:

Citation Databases
DOI URL Finder
  • The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a durable and citable identifier for electronic documents, especially for online journal articles. With the help of the DOI URL Finder, the current URL of a document can be searched.
  • DOI URL Finder
    Enter DOI (e. g. 10.1038/35057062). Leads directly to the document or to the provider of the document.
  • Alternative: you can enter the DOI directly into the address bar of your browser, prefixed with "http://dx.doi.org/" (e.g.: dx.doi.org/10.1038/35057062).
Journal Information and Ratings
  • Specialist journals are the most commonly used tool in many disciplines to publish research results. Knowledge of the journals of a subject and their value can therefore be of great benefit for a research.

    University of Regensburg: bibliographic database of scientific full-text journals
  • SCImago Journal & Country Rank
    SCImago research group: freely accessible portal with journal and country rankings
  • VHB-Jourqual
    Association of University Professors of Business Administration: ratings of economics journals
Thesauri and Dictionaries
  • Thesauri are directories of technical terms and their relationships (synonyms, upper / lower terms, etc.). They can be used to collect search terms for a research.
  • EuroVoc
    Multilingual thesaurus of the European Union. It is used i. a. by the European Parliament, the Publications Office and national and regional parliaments in Europe.
  • Semantic Network Service SNS
    Service of the German Federal Environment Agency. Provides the content of two thesauri: Environmental Thesaurus UMTHES and Geo-Thesaurus Environment.
  • Standard Thesaurus Economics STW
    Economical vocabulary. Access also via the database wiso.
  • TEMA - Technology and Management
    The database has a thesaurus which lists technical terms in particular. Use via campus network or VPN.
  • wiso Database
    The database offers three thesauri, topics: economics, social sciences and psychology. Use via campus network or VPN.
  • Wortschatz Portal
    Comprehensive German vocabulary database of the University of Leipzig, including a link to the English vocabulary portal Leipzig Corpora Collection.
Translation Services
  • Translation services help to find foreign-language equivalents to search terms, making it easier e. g. to research for non-English language specialist literature.
  • Bing Translator
    Microsoft online service that translates words, texts and entire web pages.
  • DeepL Translator
    Online service of DeepL GmbH, which translates words, texts and entire websites.
  • Dict.cc
    Multilingual online foreign language dictionary. Provides i. a. voice recordings, translation forum and vocabulary trainer.
  • Google Translator
    Google online service that translates words, texts and web pages. Tip: To translate entire pages, enter the web address in the left panel.
  • Linguee
    Multilingual online foreign language dictionary, which is connected to a search engine and displays searched words in a sentence context.
  • Link Everything Online LEO
    Multilingual online foreign language dictionary with discussion forums and language trainers.
