Seafile - cloud storage

Seafile is an open source cloudstorage software. The ZDV (Data Center) of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz provides this service for all university members in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Seafile is suitable both for personal data storage and for data and information exchange within a group. Joint editing of Office documents is also possible. So this is an attractive alternative to Dropbox for university members.

  • Synchronization of files larger than 2Gb

Deletion deadlines
  • After one year of inactivity of the user (12 months no login via Shibboleth or no use of the client) the user will be contacted by email with the request to log in to Seafile if the user wants to keep his Seafile data.
  • One month after contacting the inactive user by email, the user will be contacted again if they have not logged into Seafile within that month.
  • The people who access the inactive user's libraries will also be contacted. They will be asked to contact the inactive user as well, possibly by other means than email, so that they can log in and keep their account active. The users of the shared libraries will also receive a notice that after another month, the inactive user's libraries will be removed if they do not log into Seafile within the month. Thus, the users have enough time to save the libraries for themselves.
  • If a total of 14 months have passed in which the inactive user has not logged into Seafile and has not responded to contact, his Seafile account data and libraries will be deleted.
Version history

By default, a version history of 30 days is enabled for all libraries. All changes made during this period can be undone and older versions and deleted files can be restored. The period can be set individually for each library by each user and can also be deactivated.
