1) Target of the subproject

The primary and practical research aim of the PERIVAL-AW project is the exploration of the existing and suitable adapted organization structure for separate collection of waste values (dry/wet, home/road, organic/inorganic) in typical Chinese Peri-Urban settlement areas. A waste sorting analysis is part of the early definition phase for the implementation of the mandatorily implemented waste classification, which will be introduced in China nationwide in the waste management in the near future. The waste sorting analysis also is an important part for the determination of a waste value potential analysis (WPA) for the pilot region ZQY. The total material potentials determined by the waste sorting analysis (household waste analysis) are extrapolated through the secondary raw material price. Based on the results of the WPA, a treatment plan for the organic waste fraction will be developed in the sub-project PERIVAL-AW.

2) Structure and tasks of the subproject

The subproject PERIVAL-AW is divided into four work packages.

Work package 1 deals with networking with the Zhaoquanying planning project, which was established in 2017. The task of the University of Rostock is to carry out the waste sorting analysis in ZQY and its preparation, implementation on the ground and attended lab analysis. Waste composition and its characteristics form the important foundation for all the later suggestion on the waste treatment based on local existing waste flows.

At the center of Work package 2 is the first Workshop, which will be held at the beginning of July 2019. The main objective of the workshop is to motivate the local representatives to the economic-ecological and social effects (win-win-win) of the project. The University of Rostock will present first results of the waste sorting analysis and place them in the situation in China.

Work package 3 serves to deepen the developed decision-making principles for the construction of a biomass center, suggest investments in a sorting plant in the district as well as ideas on the process of separate collection. In addition, a feasibility study is to be developed which describes the organizational and economic framework and serves as basis for the municipal decision-makers.

In the fourth work package, a biomass center will be designed. The basis for this is the data collected in the sorting analysis including lab analysis, waste flow analysis and site visits.. A technical concept for the treatment of ZQYs waste treatment is developed (suggestions for possible process variants).

3) Expecting Results

The subproject PERIVAL-AW provides the results of two detailed sorting analysis of household waste in ZQY as well as their analytical evaluation in the laboratory. The results of the sorting analysis form the basis for the design of a biomass treatment center in ZQY. Additionally UCB and University of Rostock do together site visits at the kick-off meeting and before workshop I to point out the existing barriers of waste sorting and recycling and verify waste flows. In addition, a feasibility study is developed, which describes in particular the organizational and economic framework and serves as a basis for the municipal decision-makers.
