Research Through Design for the design of Sustainable Mobility System

Workshop with international and UAS Trier experts

The research through design method for system analysis and future scenario development is an alternative scientific research approach to deal with the situation of real world problems through a participatory format. The system's future scenarios are negotiable with the involved stakeholders for the design of the system. However they lack formal scientific methodology; and on the other hand, scientific main stream methodologies often are inadequate, as seen in many real world systems, which are much more complex than the common tools take into regard, owing to the complex dynamics of normative social values that are unpredictable. Therefore in the workshop the method of research through design, specifically addressed to "sustainable mobility system", will be extensively explored, involving students, faculty, researchers and external experts. The external speakers Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Jonas, engineer and transformation design expert, will give the detail insight of systemic and complex nature of system's plurality future alternatives judgment, and Mr. Himanshu Raj from ICLEI (https://www.iclei.org/, a worldwide network of regional governments committed to sustainable urban development) will give global insight of real world mobility challenges. The international e-mobility status quo will be presented by Prof. Dr. Eckard Helmers from UCB, UAS Trier. Further the challenges of mobility system development in rural areas will be presented by Dr. Viktor Klein from his small community in Birkenfeld.

The participants for the workshop are expected from interdisciplinary study programs and research topics. The workshop is open to all faculty and students of UCB and Trier on 3rd and 4th February 2020 starting 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. It is expected that the outcome of the workshop will support a policy decision making field and future scenario project. This application of the research through design method for the design of a sustainable mobility system model to support policy and planning decision in the workshop is adopting Vester Sensitivity analysis soft tool.
