WLAN - eduroam

Important: Change of certificate on 21 October 2026

On Wednesday at midday, we will renew the certificate for eduroam connections. If possible, please use this opportunity to switch your Wi-Fi connection to the eduroam CAT tool, which will become mandatory in the near future anyway. You’ll find instructions further below. If you need to keep using your current method for now, check the details of the new certificate for radius.umwelt-campus.de and only click Connect if the SHA-1 fingerprint matches the following:

Wi-Fi access is available across the entire campus. Because the campus takes part in eduroam (Education Roaming), staff and students of participating universities and organisations can connect to Wi-Fi at any participating organisation’s location. For guest lectures, semesters abroad, business trips and similar visits to another university, you don’t have to request guest access first. You can log in directly with your usual credentials. Almost every European country is now part of eduroam, and more and more universities in each country are joining their national research networks. A map of all participating locations is available at www.eduroam.de and www.eduroam.org.

Instructions

The eduroam CAT can be accessed via the following link https://cat.eduroam.org. After selecting Trier University of Applied Sciences as the location and then selecting the IT Department in Birkenfeld, your operating system is automatically recognised and you can follow further instructions. During installation, enter your User-ID in the following format: <login name>@umwelt-campus.de, with the corresponding password. This combination does not necessarily match your email address.

Windows
  1. If you have never connected your device to the eduroam Wi-Fi before, please continue with step 5 of these instructions.
  2. Open the Settings on your system (Windows key + I) and navigate to Network & internet.
  3. In the Wi-Fi section, select Manage known networks.
  4. Remove all networks with “eduroam” in their name from your system by selecting Forget.
  5. Download the eduroam CAT tool, run the installer and follow the instructions.
  6. Enter your User-ID in the following format: <login name>@umwelt-campus.de together with the matching password. This combination does not necessarily match your email address.
  7. When a security warning asks whether you want to install the DFN-Verein Community Root CA 2022 certificate, confirm with Yes.
iOS and macOS
  1. If you have never connected your device to the eduroam Wi-Fi before, please continue with step 4 of these instructions.
  2. Open Settings and navigate to Wi-Fi.
  3. Click eduroam and remove the saved settings by selecting Forget This Network. If you don’t have this option, go to General in Settings, then to VPN & Device Management and eduroam. Remove the installed profile.
  4. Download the eduroam CAT tool from cat.eduroam.org.
  5. A message will appear saying that cat.eduroam.org is trying to download a configuration profile. Confirm with Allow.
  6. Now open the Settings app. Navigate to General and then to VPN & Device Management.
  7. Click the eduroam profile you just downloaded, then click Install. Install the required certificates by tapping Install.
  8. Enter your User-ID in the following format: <login name>@umwelt-campus.de together with the matching password. This combination does not necessarily match your email address.
  9. When connecting for the first time, it can take up to a minute until the device receives an IP address and the checkmark for a successful connection appears.
Android
  1. Make sure that the eduroam Wi-Fi is not saved in your system’s Wi-Fi settings. If it is, delete all saved settings for the eduroam Wi-Fi.
  2. Download the official getEduroam app from the Google Play Store (or an alternative app store).
  3. Open the app and select Hochschule Trier as the institution and Rechenzentrum Birkenfeld mit @umwelt-campus.de.
  4. Enter your credentials in the following format: <login name>@umwelt-campus.de together with the matching password. This combination does not necessarily match your email address.
  5. Tap Install to finish. On some devices, you’ll also need to allow a silent notification in the last step, or explicitly save the Wi-Fi settings again.
Linux

The installation program is a Python script. It will attempt to install eduroam in NetworkManager. If the system is not managed by NetworkManager or the version is too old, a wpa_supplicant configuration file will be created instead. The installation program creates a .cat_installer subdirectory in your personal folder and copies the server certificates there. To connect to the network, you need a user account from your organisation. Visit their help pages to find out how to get such an account. Most probably you already have such an account.

IMPORTANT: During installation, enter User-ID in the following format: <login name>@umwelt-campus.de, with the matching password. This combination does not necessarily correspond to your e-mail address.
