About us

The IT departments at the main campus and at the environmental campus are central facilities under the responsibility of the president according to §90 HochSchG Rheinland-Pfalz. They are responsible for the planning and secure operation of the IT infrastructure (wired and wireless networks, physical and virtual servers, computer pools, workstation systems, external connections to the WIssenschafts-Netz Rheinland-Pfalz (WIN-RP) and the Internet) at all locations of the university. In addition, they provide all of the university's facilities with numerous services related to information and communication technologies (ICT).

Almost all areas of the university depend in many ways on a reliable, secure and highly available IT infrastructure and the modern information and communication technologies that build on it in order to perform their tasks in teaching, research and administration. The rapidly advancing digitization of processes throughout the university places high demands on the performance and availability of these technologies. This requires sustainable but also forward-looking and dynamic IT management in the data centers in order to constantly develop the service portfolio in line with the university's current needs.

The data centers therefore see themselves as strategic partners in the development of the university by helping to shape and develop the processes in teaching, research and administration in questions of technical conception, information security and concrete implementation, thus enabling and supporting the digitization of the university in its core processes. This also includes evaluating cooperative or external service offerings in addition to the university's own services with regard to their importance, future development, cost-effectiveness and security, and integrating them into the university's IT landscape where appropriate.

In this sense, the university IT departments support all university members (as well as visiting scientists and visiting students) by providing advice and training and are the first point of contact for questions regarding digitization and the use of the university's range of ICT services. The concerns and satisfaction of their customers therefore form the basis of their daily thinking and actions.
