FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Einrichtung E-Mail-Clients

1. Which email client should I use?

A list of email clients you can use can be found here → -> E-Mail-Clients.

Please note that only the Outlook mail client included with Microsoft Office can be used without concerns. All other apps and programs named Outlook may not be used for the university account. This recommendation naturally also applies to personal email accounts.

2. How do I best set up my email client (Exchange protocol)?

If an Exchange connection is possible, prefer using this protocol. This will synchronize not only your emails, but also your contacts and calendar entries with your device. Use your default email address (not your alias) and your personal password for setup. If you don't know the difference between your default email address and your alias, please read the following information -> E-Mail - Allgemeines.

If a Shibboleth login appears during the setup attempt, you can cancel the automatic setup without entering your credentials. Use manual configuration instead.

Server and protocols:

  • Account type: Exchange
  • Email address: Default email address
  • Incoming mail server / Exchange server: exchange.umwelt-campus.de
  • Domain\User: umwelt-campus\<User ID>
  • Password: Your university account password
3. How do I alternatively set up my email client (IMAP protocol)?

If an Exchange connection is not possible, use the IMAP protocol instead. This will only synchronize your emails and no contacts or calendar entries. Use your default email address (not your alias) and your personal password for setup. If you don't know the difference between your default email address and your alias, please read the following information-> E-Mail - Allgemeines.

If a Shibboleth login appears during the setup attempt, you can cancel the automatic setup without entering your credentials. Use manual configuration instead.

Server and protocols:

  • Incoming mail server: exchange.umwelt-campus.de
  • Encryption: Port 993 (SSL) (alternatively 143 (TLS / STARTTLS))
  • Outgoing mail server: smtp.umwelt-campus.de
  • Encryption: Port 587 (STARTTLS)
  • Authentication method: Normal password
4. How do I set up my email client in an emergency (POP3 protocol)?

If your device supports neither Exchange nor IMAP as a connection protocol, use the POP3 protocol instead. This will only retrieve your emails and no contacts or calendar entries.

  • Incoming mail server: exchange.umwelt-campus.de
  • Encryption: Port 995 (SSL) (alternatively 110 (TLS / STARTTLS))
  • Outgoing mail server: smtp.umwelt-campus.de
  • Encryption: Port 587 (STARTTLS)
5. How do I set up the Gmail app by Google?

Use your default email address (not your alias) and your personal password for setup. If you don't know the difference between your default email address and your alias, please read the following information -> E-Mail - Allgemeines.

Unfortunately, automatic configuration does not work satisfactorily in the Gmail app. If a Shibboleth login appears during the setup attempt, you can cancel the automatic setup without entering your credentials. Use manual configuration instead.

Server and protocols:

  • Account type: Exchange
  • Email address: Default email address
  • Incoming mail server / Exchange server: exchange.umwelt-campus.de
  • Domain\User: umwelt-campus\<User ID>
  • Password: Your university account password
