The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 goals for sustainable development that were adopted by all United Nations countries on September 25, 2015, in New York. They form the core of the 2030 Agenda and build on the earlier Millennium Development Goals. The SDGs were developed after the UN Conference “Rio+20” in 2012 in a multi-year process involving governments, academia, business, and civil society.
The goals cover social, environmental, and economic issues and apply to all countries worldwide. There are a total of 169 sub-goals and over 230 measurable indicators to track progress. Although they are not legally binding, they are considered important political guidelines. The SDGs are intended to help combat poverty, protect the planet, and enable a good life for all people in peace – by 2030.
The SDG nature trail at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld is a project funded by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Science and Health (MWG) that aims to capture the SDG references of the university's various activities and illustrate them through a tour. The nature trail thus serves primarily to raise awareness by making the 17 goals and their significance for global and regional challenges understandable and visible. In addition to providing knowledge about the SDGs, it also promotes transparency regarding the activities undertaken by the campus and, through practical examples and tips, provides inspiration for integrating the implementation of SDGs into everyday private life.
To bring the SDGs to life, a special educational trail has been developed at the Birkenfeld Environmental Campus. Funded by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Science and Health (MWG), the project highlights how the university is contributing to the implementation of the SDGs – right on campus.
The SDG nature trail clearly shows:
The aim is to raise awareness, impart knowledge, and motivate people to implement the SDGs in their own lives through concrete examples and tips.
